Privacy & Automated Decision Making – Short Briefing Note

A short briefing note on upcoming changes to privacy and automated decision making (ADM) has been produced for IAB Australia members. Amendments to the Privacy Act 1988 were passed in December 2024 including a transparency obligation relating to Automated Decision Making and regulated entities must comply with the ADM transparency provision from December 2026. Not all ADM decisions will be affected – the briefing note provides some guidance. 

The regulator (OAIC) intends to commence outreach on ADM implementation in Q4 2025 and will be meeting with IAB to discuss ADM and digital advertising. IAB will update members on the OAIC’s advice later this year.
