Sydney, Australia, April 24, 2012 – InMobi, the largest independent mobile ad network, released its latest Mobile Insights Report today, highlighting Apple’s dominance in the Australian mobile network.

The report shows iOS’s lead over Google’s Android increasing, with iOS holding 54 per cent of the total mix and Android sitting at 23.6 per cent. Nokia’s operating system has lost a significant share of the market, shifting from second position 12 months ago to fourth position. This is supported by a 219% increase in smartphone impressions in the Australian mobile market.

“More people are choosing to use smartphones, which is why we have seen such a huge increase in smartphone impressions on our network. Apple continues to dominate and Samsung has held on to its market share with the Samsung Galaxy S II, but Nokia is missing the smartphone trend,” says Francisco Cordero, General Manager and Regional Director of InMobi Australia and New Zealand.

The report also highlighted an impressive growth of mobile advertising in Australia. This quarter the InMobi network recorded over 1.5 billion mobile advertising impressions and a 156% growth in impressions over the past year.

The report further revealed that three out of the top five handsets are now Apple devices, including the Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad.

“Compared to last year, we are starting to see a strong usage of tablet devices, especially Apple iPads, across our Australian network. As a result, it is the first time that a tablet device has entered our top five handsets in Australia.” says Mr Cordero.

“In the US and UK, Apple iPads sit in third and second place , so following the global trend we expect to see a continued growth in tablets in Australia this year. This of course will be driven by the recent release of the new iPad, as well as the reduced pricing of the iPad 2.”
